Police Chief Reports Russian Hackers Seized Control of Norwegian Dam

VG reported that Gangås mentioned an increase in cyberattacks on Western infrastructure, noting they often aim to showcase capabilities rather than cause damage. She emphasized the need for Norway to brace for more hacking incidents.

During the same event, Nils Andreas Stensønes, head of the Norwegian Intelligence Service, identified Russia as the foremost threat to Norway’s security.

Cyberattacks on Western entities form part of Russia’s hybrid warfare strategy. In another water-related incident in January 2024, a hacking group infiltrated a Texas water facility’s system, causing an overflow. These hackers are suspected to have Kremlin ties.

The dam, located in Bremanger municipality, about 150 kilometers north of Bergen, is not used for energy production. Local reports suggest hackers exploited a security gap due to a weak password.

Oh joy, nothing like a bunch of Russian hackers playing ‘dare’ with a Norwegian dam! Guess we should all invest in stronger passwords and maybe a few more IT classes, eh? 😂💻

Gotta love it when a weak password turns a Norwegian dam into a playground for Russian hackers. Who needs water when you can just flood the place with your incompetence? 😂🔒

Just what we needed—hackers playing tag with our dams like it’s some kind of twisted game of Cyber Monopoly. 🕹️ Next thing you know, they’ll be demanding a ransom in krone for our water supply! 😂

Looks like the Russians are really going for gold with those cyberattacks, eh? I mean, who needs Olympic training when you can just hack a dam with a password that’s as secure as a politician’s promise? 😂🔓

  5. Looks like those Russian hackers are just trying to give us a splash of excitement in Norway! 😂 Who knew a weak password could turn a dam into an IT disaster? Classic!

Blimey, who knew a dodgy password could open the floodgates for Russian hackers? 🤦‍♂️ Maybe they should’ve just put up a ‘Welcome’ sign while they were at it! 💻💧

So, let me get this straight: Russian hackers can break into a dam with a password weaker than my grandmother’s Wi-Fi? Brilliant! 😅 #CybersecurityFail

  9. Just wonderful, isn’t it? Who needs a well-guarded dam when a password like “1234” can invite the Russians over for tea? 🍵💻

Just what we needed, a dam with a side of Russian hackers—who knew cyber warfare could be this… refreshing? 🤦‍♂️ Maybe next time they should try a password that doesn’t sound like a toddler’s first attempt at spelling! 🧐💻

Just what we needed—Russian hackers taking a holiday in Norway to play with our dams! 😂 I suppose next they’ll be offering cybersecurity courses on how to use “password123” properly.
