Olivér Várhelyi Denies Knowledge of Alleged Spy Ring Operated from His Office

At the time the reports surfaced, Várhelyi told European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that he was “not aware” of the alleged Hungarian efforts, a denial he repeated on Monday.

“I had no knowledge of this claim which was made in the press,” he told MEPs in response to a question from Greens lawmaker Daniel Freund.

Freund had asked the commissioner if he had known of any of the activities supposedly run out of the Hungarian permanent representation to the EU, which he worked at from 2011 and ran from 2015.

Hungarian officials working in the EU institutions at the time described the network to POLITICO as an open secret in the Belgian capital.

Following the media reports, Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar — who also worked at the Hungarian permanent representation under Várhelyi — accused him of withholding information about his time as an ambassador.

“In my opinion, Olivér Várhelyi, the current EU Commissioner and former EU Ambassador (and my former boss), did not reveal the whole truth when he denied this during the official investigation the other day,” Magyar wrote in a Facebook post.

  1. Seems like Olivér has mastered the fine art of selective hearing – perhaps he took notes from a few seasoned politicians? 🤷‍♂️ No knowledge, eh? Must be nice to live in a bubble where ‘open secrets’ are just the latest trend! 🥳

Fascinating how the only thing Olivér seems to be “unaware” of is how the coffee machine works in his own office. 🤔🤷‍♂️ Classic politician move, innit?

Seems like Olivér’s got a PhD in ‘I know nothing’ while running a spy ring – must be a new EU leadership tactic! 🤷‍♂️💼 Classic!

Oh, of course, why would Várhelyi know anything about a “spy ring” operating right under his nose? Must’ve been too busy perfecting his coffee-making skills in Brussels ☕️🤷‍♂️.

Blimey, who knew running a spy ring was just another Tuesday in Brussels? 😂 Olivér’s got a PhD in “I know nothing,” clearly!

Looks like Olivér’s got a memory like a sieve—great for catching fish stories, not so much for recalling spy rings! 🤔🕵️‍♂️ Must be a special talent in the EU: denial as a form of diplomacy!

  7. Seems like Várhelyi is channeling his inner magician with that “no knowledge” trick—perfect for a show in Brussels! 🙄✨ I guess “open secret” is just another term for “didn’t see anything” in EU lingo, right? 🍷

  8. Just another day in Brussels, where “I had no idea” is the go-to phrase for every political scandal. Must be nice to be in a position where *not knowing* is actually a job requirement! 🤷‍♂️💼

Not surprised he “didn’t know” – sounds like a classic case of selective amnesia, innit? 🤔 Guess the spy game is just another day at the office for him!

Seems like Várhelyi’s playing a grand game of hide and seek—just not very good at it, eh? 🤷‍♂️ I guess “I don’t know” is just another way of saying “I’m absolutely not involved” in bureaucrat-speak! 🕵️‍♂️💼

Not to worry, folks! It’s just another day in Brussels where “I knew nothing” is practically the national sport. 😂 Maybe he was too busy perfecting his “don’t ask, don’t tell” strategy!

Oh sure, who needs a knack for keeping track of spy rings when you’re busy charming the socks off the EU? 🤷‍♂️ Sounds like a classic case of “not my circus, not my monkeys.” 🍿

Seems like Olivér’s memory is as selective as a tourist with a bad map—who would’ve thought a spy ring could operate right under his nose without him noticing? 😂 Typical EU drama!
