BRUSSELS — A descendant of the founder of the Italian oil company Eni is considering legal action against Giorgia Meloni’s government for using his family name in a significant funding initiative targeted at the African continent, as reported by the Italian media on Wednesday.
The Italian newspaper La Stampa reported that Pietro Mattei sent a cease and desist letter to the office of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni last month, requesting the removal of his family name from the government’s Mattei Plan for Africa, a multi-billion investment program.
Pietro, the nephew of Enrico Mattei who established Eni in 1953, claims the Meloni administration’s policies do not align with the family’s perspectives. “I find the government’s policies truly unacceptable. On immigration, on energy costs, on relations with the United States,” Mattei told La Stampa, indicating he might pursue legal action.
