Skopje – Prime Minister Christian Mitskoski commented on the rapporteur Thomas Weiss‘s working report, highlighting its importance as it marks the first instance of a specific Macedonian identity being acknowledged. He expressed that Europe has an opportunity to rectify a historical injustice, affirming that there exists a Macedonian identity and language, though opinions among European parliamentarians vary.
– Unfortunately, some colleagues from the GERB party have suggested that the term “current” should precede Macedonian identity. This is not surprising to us, as from the beginning of accepting the previous government, we noted that this reflects an effort to create an artificial, current Macedonian nation, Mitskoski stated.
He emphasized that discussions with influential figures in both the European Parliament and Brussels have reinforced his belief that the issue extends beyond a few hundred citizens identifying as part of the Bulgarian community in Macedonia. Instead, it represents an attempt to fabricate a new, artificial Macedonian identity rooted in Bulgarian heritage.
– I will not accept this and will vehemently reject it, as it contradicts European values. This situation illustrates the ignorance and intentions behind the actions of Bujar Osmani and Dimitar Kovachevski, Mitskoski declared, attributing the blame to his predecessor Kovachevski and former minister Osmani for endorsing the “French proposal.”
– I am awaiting Europe’s response. Currently, there is an opportunity for Europe to address the historical injustice resulting from the acceptance of the terms put forth by Osmani and Kovachevski, he stated.
Mitskoski asserted that official Sofia has not transformed and remains a captive of “Zhivkovism,” as it seeks to construct a new Macedonian identity based on Bulgarian foundations. (June 2, 2025)
