Merz mentioned he would wait for the outcome of a scheduled trip by his foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, to the Middle East on Thursday before deciding on potential actions. He refrained from commenting when asked about a possible halt of German arms supplies to Israel.
Germany is typically one of Israel’s strongest allies, yet Merz faces increasing pressure from his coalition, particularly members of the center-left Social Democratic Party, to take definitive steps to sanction Israel. This is the first time Merz has suggested possible sanctions against Israel regarding its activities in Gaza.
International pressure is also rising, with leaders of other European nations calling for action. Recently, French President Emmanuel Macron announced intentions to recognize a Palestinian state.
Merz stated that Germany would collaborate with Jordan to assist in the airlift of food and medical supplies to Gaza. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius will work closely with France and the U.K. on this effort.
“We realize this can only be a small aid for the people in Gaza, but it is a contribution we are pleased to offer,” Merz stated.
