Merz in Indien: Neue Chancen abseits von China

The chancellor is on his first official trip to Asia in India. In Gujarat, he meets Narendra Modi. The discussions cover raw materials, defense, skilled labor, and strategic distancing from China. Hans von der Burchard explains why India is gaining importance for this government and outlines the political and economic challenges.

In a 200-second interview, Sebastian Roloff, the SPD’s economic spokesperson, shares expectations tied to the India visit and explains why Germany can exert only limited pressure on defense deals and Russia-related issues.

Alongside this, foreign and finance ministers are traveling in the opposite direction. Johann Wadephul and Lars Klingbeil are in Washington, focusing on Greenland, Russia again, and primarily on rare earths. Rasmus Buchsteiner explains why discussions about resources are strategically crucial for the German industry and the challenges in reducing dependency on China.

Looks like we’re off to India to discuss raw materials and defense while China watches from the sidelines, eh? Just what we need, another trip to find out that the grass is greener somewhere else. 😏✈️

  3. Seems like the chancellor’s finally discovered there’s life beyond China; who knew India was more than just a place for curry? 🍛 Let’s see if they can score some “strategic” deals without stepping on too many toes – or cook them! 😏
