Heathrow Airport Closed Due to Power Outage Following Substation Fire
London’s Heathrow Airport will remain closed throughout Friday after a fire at a nearby electrical substation caused a major power outage in the area.
As Europe’s busiest airport, Heathrow has urged passengers to avoid traveling to the facility and to check with their airlines for further updates.
“Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage. To ensure the safety of passengers and staff, the airport will remain closed until 23:59 on March 21,” Heathrow officials announced in a post on social media.
The London Fire Brigade reported that around 70 firefighters were working to control the blaze at the substation in Hayes, located less than 5 kilometers from Heathrow. Approximately 150 people have been evacuated from the surrounding area, with authorities setting up a 200-meter exclusion zone.
“This is a highly visible and significant incident,” said Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne. “This will be a prolonged operation, with crews staying on-site throughout the night. As the morning progresses, disruptions are expected to worsen, and we strongly advise people to avoid the area.”
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and further updates are expected as emergency teams work to restore power.
