BELGRADE – During a visit to Belgrade, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos expressed that Serbia has much to offer Europe and that the continent is eager to welcome the country. In her discussions with Prime Minister Đura Macut, she invited him to collaborate on necessary reforms to facilitate Serbia’s EU membership. “We are presented with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to achieve the unification of Europe. This goes beyond just enlargement; many candidate nations have recognized the need to accelerate their reform processes. I hope to see Serbia, a nation with a rich heritage and innovative people, doing the same,” Kos remarked at a joint press conference following her meeting with Prime Minister Macut. She conveyed her confidence in Macut as a partner in the EU integration journey.
Kos highlighted Serbia’s potential contributions to Europe, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts on reforms essential for membership. “Our message to Prime Minister Macut is clear: work with us to implement reforms that will pave the way for your membership. Collaborate to establish an independent judiciary capable of combating corruption effectively. Work with us to create legislation and institutions that support a free media where diverse opinions can flourish. Partner with us to develop an electoral framework that ensures the voices of the Serbian people are heard,” she stated. Furthermore, Kos pointed out that without these reforms, Serbia’s advancement would be hindered. “What we are asking aligns closely with the demands of those protesting in the streets of Serbia,” she noted, recalling Serbia’s legacy as a nation of influential thinkers and a robust society.
Reflecting on her initial meeting with Prime Minister Macut, she described it as very positive and expressed that they share a common perspective on addressing societal issues, emphasizing that genuine transformation must originate from within, rather than being imposed externally. Kos also mentioned their discussions on Europe’s role in a rapidly evolving world and the importance of cooperation between the European Commission and Serbia’s new government. “Europe is undergoing swift changes, facing new security challenges and shifts in trade dynamics. In this context, the unity of Europe represents the optimal solution. Our neighbors and candidate countries are vital, not only as partners but as future EU members,” Kos concluded, expressing her delight at being in Belgrade and engaging with the new Prime Minister.
