Crane Malfunction on Dirk Boutslaan and Franz Thielemanslaan in Leuven

Leuven (Eurotoday) – Traffic access has resumed in the Leuven area near Dirk Boutslaan and Franz Thielemanslaan following a temporary closure caused by a crane system malfunction during construction work.

Construction on the site surrounding Dirk Boutslaan and Franz Thielemanslaan in Leuven has recommenced after the successful completion of crane repairs. The malfunction occurred when a crane’s support arm failed during a stone-lifting procedure, causing several stones to fall from a significant height.

Fortunately, the incident resulted in no injuries or damage to surrounding property. Authorities promptly sealed off the affected area to ensure public safety while specialists dismantled and removed the faulty crane mechanism.

Have similar crane incidents occurred in Leuven or nearby areas?

Leuven has seen very few serious issues involving construction equipment in recent years. While crane-related breakdowns are uncommon, a few minor occurrences have been recorded. In 2019, a light crane failure on Naamsestraat during renovation works led to a short-term traffic diversion, without any injuries.

In 2021, a hydraulic issue with a small lifting device halted operations briefly at the Bondgenotenlaan construction site, though no structural damage was reported.

Larger incidents have occurred elsewhere in the Flemish region. For example, in 2022 a crane accident at a port construction site in Antwerp prompted evacuations, though no one was harmed. In Brussels, a 2020 incident drew attention when crane equipment came dangerously close to nearby residential buildings—prompting authorities to tighten safety inspection protocols.

In response to such events, regulatory bodies have enforced stricter EU machinery safety standards. These include mandatory operator certification and rigorous force testing evaluations to ensure equipment reliability.

Oh, a malfunctioning crane in Leuven? Because nothing says “efficient construction” like a surprise game of stone dodgeball! 🎉 Just what we needed—more excitement in traffic! 🚦😅

Oh, the majestic crane of Leuven has taken a little unscheduled nap, eh? Good to know that when our heavy lifters decide to drop the stones instead of lifting them, it’s just another day in paradise! 😂🚧

Looks like the crane decided to take a little nap right in the middle of Leuven’s finest traffic ballet. Who needs smooth construction when you can have a surprise game of ‘dodge the falling stones’? 😂💼

Just another day in Leuven where the cranes have more drama than a Belgian soap opera! Can’t wait for the sequel: “Falling Stones: A Love Story” 🎭🪨
