Paris – France is seeking further clarifications from Brussels before forming an official response to the European Commission’s proposal to cut EU greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels, as reported by government sources to AFP.
Several countries, including Germany, have shown support for this ambitious emissions target, although some have attached conditions to their backing. The Commission has been advocating for this reduction goal for over a year but still needs to present a formal strategy to the 27 EU member states, with assurances that this will happen “before the summer” according to an announcement made in early April.
However, there is dissent among member states, with some, like Italy, deeming the 2040 goal overly ambitious, and Hungary outright opposing it. Conversely, nations such as Finland, Portugal, Spain, and Denmark are in favor of the proposed 90% reduction.
“We are awaiting the Commission’s proposal” to determine France’s stance, stated officials from the Minister for Ecological Transition’s office during an interview with AFP on Monday.
Environmental advocates are growing concerned about France’s cautious approach, especially as the United States moves away from its commitments under the Paris Agreement. (April 29, 2025)
