The controversy surrounding a potential deal involving Elon Musk’s Starlink in Italy has placed the billionaire tech mogul—who serves as a senior adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump—at the center of a heated political debate.
Earlier this month, opposition parties urged the government to suspend negotiations with Musk’s SpaceX after he threatened to disable Starlink’s communication services in Ukraine. The satellite network plays a crucial role in supporting Kyiv’s military efforts against Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Discussions about a possible Starlink agreement first emerged in January following Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit to Trump’s Florida residence.
Meloni has worked to maintain strong ties with Trump’s administration while also forging a close relationship with Musk.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated that technical discussions on the deal would resume once tensions had eased.
“The key concern is what is most beneficial and secure for the country,” Crosetto said.
