The Trump administration is pushing to dismantle several U.S. government-funded media organizations, including Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), Radio Free Asia, and Voice of America (VOA). Over the weekend, officials ordered nearly all VOA staff—who are federal employees—to stay home. Additionally, the administration announced it would suspend grants to RFE/RL, Radio Free Asia, and several other smaller media outlets that operate as nonprofits but rely entirely on federal funding.
“This is not within the administration’s power,” said Capus, pointing out that Congress appropriates these funds, meaning only lawmakers can make such decisions.
Trump’s allies argue that VOA and similar outlets are biased. Both the former president and his adviser, billionaire Elon Musk, have referred to these organizations’ employees as “radical leftist lunatics” who misuse taxpayer money.
When asked whether RFE/RL would challenge the administration’s decision in court, Capus responded, “We are considering all options. The support we’re receiving from Washington and around the world has been uplifting.”
‘A Beacon of Truth’
Trump’s actions have sparked strong reactions in Europe, where U.S.-funded media outlets are valued for their global reach.
“These organizations have served as a beacon of truth, democracy, and hope for millions worldwide,” the European Commission told POLITICO on Sunday. “In an era of unverified content and disinformation, journalism and press freedom remain essential pillars of democracy.”
