The restoration and promotion of the Kasta Tomb in Amphipolis is advancing with the development of visitor pathways, reception facilities, and a museum exhibition space, following thorough studies in architecture, engineering, and museology conducted by the Ministry of Culture and other relevant organizations.
Currently, the project to stabilize the burial monument’s enclosure is underway, backed by a budget exceeding 10 million euros funded through the Regional Operational Program of Central Macedonia – ESPA 2021-2027 and national resources.
Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni emphasized that the Kasta Tomb represents a monument of significant historical and archaeological importance. She noted the need for a comprehensive approach to ensure its protection and accessibility. The exhibition space is part of a broader plan for visitor facilities surrounding the Kasta Tomb.
The exhibition area is designed to cater to visitor needs and manage the flow of visits due to limited space, allowing small groups access. It incorporates modern architectural principles and a bioclimatic approach, aiming to enhance visitor engagement through digital applications while ensuring adequate facilities for a pleasant experience. This study prioritizes the protection of the archaeological site and its natural surroundings, highlights the monument’s values, and ensures accessibility for all, including those with disabilities.
The exhibition space’s location is carefully chosen to provide a comprehensive visitor experience while preserving the historical environment around the monument from new visible structures. The Ministry of Culture’s project aims to protect and promote the Kasta Tomb, fostering greater interest and visitor traffic to the significant archaeological site at Amphipolis. Thanks were expressed to various officials for their ongoing support of the Kasta Tomb.
Visitor Reception and Accessibility Features
The Ministry of Culture reports that the visitor reception and information features – including pathways, viewing platforms, parking areas, and service facilities – will ensure a comprehensive visitor experience, harmonizing with Amphipolis’s natural and historical surroundings. The visitor pathway runs at a safe distance from the burial enclosure, allowing optimal views of the tomb and its relationship with the surrounding archaeological site and Strymon River.
This pathway connects seamlessly to the Kasta Tomb exhibition space, with a branch leading to the burial monument entrance. Additionally, a connecting trail takes visitors to the preserved Macedonian Tomb III, enhancing the overall visit experience. The project aims to provide accessible experiences for all visitors, including those with disabilities.
Exhibition Space of the Kasta Tomb
The architectural design focuses on harmonizing with the natural surroundings, largely placing the building underground with its main facade oriented towards the monument. The exhibition space is integrated with pathways around the tomb, positioned along the circular route surrounding it.
Efforts are made to minimize environmental impact in the design, with the exhibition space designed as a curved, permeable structure that visitors encounter after touring the burial monument. It will showcase architectural elements currently stored in the Archaeological Museum of Amphipolis that cannot be reinstalled in the monument itself.
The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the unique and historically significant features of the Kasta Tomb. The permanent exhibition is structured into three sections: Hall 1 displays findings in showcases with accessible information, Hall 2 offers digital interactive experiences with the monument, and the open arcade provides visitors a comprehensive view of the tomb, including the preserved original marble facade of the enclosure.
