Stockholm – The Swedish Maritime Administration has previously indicated that GPS disruptions in the Baltic Sea can endanger recreational vessels.
Now, the authority has observed that ships’ radar systems are also affected, according to the Swedish newspaper Expressen.
“To my knowledge, we have not received any reports of radar disturbances prior to this,” says Sebastian Wigmo, spokesperson for the Maritime Administration, to the newspaper.
Disrupting radar systems requires more sophisticated methods than those used to disrupt GPS systems. While the Maritime Administration does not speculate on the cause of the radar interruption, it asserts that it could not have happened naturally.
“However, we cannot confirm that it is intentional. It is theoretically possible that an unintentional error is impacting the radar,” states Sebastian Wigmo.
Several EU nations are urging the EU Commission to take measures to enhance GPS systems, which also influence air traffic. Reports indicate that GPS disruptions have intensified throughout the spring.
