Greeks Rally in Athens to Promote Human Rights Awareness
Athens, Greece, December 19, 2024—In the shadow of the iconic Acropolis, a powerful movement is gaining momentum. On Sunday, December 15, 2024, a group of 21 determined volunteers gathered in Athens’ historic Syntagma Square to deliver a resounding message: human rights must be more than ideals—they are the foundation of a free and just society. Armed with banners, booklets, and their conviction, these volunteers took to the streets of Athens to inspire a renewed commitment to upholding human rights.
Organized by the Athens branch of the International NGO United for Human Rights (UHR), with the support of the International Association of Scientologists (IAS), the event sought to spotlight the relevance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). In a city that has been the cradle of democracy and freedom, the campaign resonated deeply with locals and visitors alike.
Reviving the Spirit of Advocacy in Greece
Greece’s long-standing legacy as a global advocate for human rights—from the early principles of democracy to its modern-day commitments—was at the heart of this initiative. The campaign focused on education as the cornerstone of protecting these rights, embodying values central to Greek society: solidarity, dignity, and freedom.
Beginning in Syntagma Square, a symbol of the people’s struggles and resilience, the volunteers marched through Athens’ bustling streets, passionately proclaiming the 30 articles of the UDHR. “Human rights are for everyone, and it starts with you!” they declared, urging Athenians to embrace these principles. The march served as a poignant reminder that understanding is the first step toward protecting and preserving fundamental rights.
Advocacy with a Cultural Flair
This wasn’t just another traditional awareness march—it had a distinctly Greek twist. At Monastiraki and Plaka, two of Athens’ most vibrant neighborhoods, volunteers borrowed microphones from local street musicians, weaving their human rights message into the city’s cultural tapestry. The fusion of advocacy and music captivated Athenians and tourists, transforming casual Sunday outings into opportunities for reflection and dialogue.
Throughout the event, volunteers distributed 900 informational booklets to passersby, spreading awareness one reader at a time. For Greeks, who have historically addressed challenges through education and dialogue, this effort served as a natural and inspiring extension of their heritage.
The campaign’s impact extended beyond the streets and into the airwaves. During the event, Athens 9.84, one of the city’s most popular radio stations, hosted a live interview with a representative of the group. The broadcast reached homes, cafes, and workplaces across Athens, engaging thousands in conversations about human rights and their real-world importance.
Turning Ideals into Action: L. Ron Hubbard’s Human Rights Legacy
The campaign drew inspiration from L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Church of Scientology, who famously stated, “Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream.” The values behind this initiative align with the Church’s belief that education is essential to societal progress.
“By teaching individuals about their rights and the rights of others, we empower communities to create societies rooted in freedom and dignity,” said Ivan Arjona-Pelado, Scientology’s representative to European institutions and the United Nations. He emphasized that wherever there are Scientologists, you’ll find efforts to promote human rights education, fostering change one individual at a time.
In Greece, Natalia Fasfali, responsible for the social activities of Scientology in the country, echoed these sentiments. “This campaign highlights that real change begins with each individual. Educating people on the 30 articles of the UDHR equips them to protect their own rights and those of their neighbors.”
