Hungary Grants Asylum to Poland’s Nationalist Former Justice Minister

Zbigniew Ziobro asserted that he has become a target of personal revenge by Donald Tusk and his associates, warning government members of severe consequences. He argued that the proceedings against him are retaliatory acts by the opposition.

Polish government minister Tomasz Siemoniak criticized Ziobro, stating that seeking refuge in Hungary epitomizes Ziobro’s downfall and identifying him as a former Minister of Justice fleeing from the Polish justice system.

Ziobro lost his immunity in November last year amid intensifying conflicts between Tusk’s government and the opposition Law and Justice party. Several former Law and Justice officials are being investigated for alleged corruption during their tenure.

Ziobro is a significant figure in an inquiry into the alleged use of Pegasus spyware by the Law and Justice government to monitor political opponents. If charged, he could face up to 25 years in prison.

He has previously fled abroad and applied for international protection for his wife.

Hungary had earlier granted asylum to ex-Polish Deputy Justice Minister Marcin Romanowski, who faced multiple charges in Poland for misuse of public funds during his tenure from 2019 to 2023.
