How Viktor Orbán Set Traps to Prevent His Successor from Governing Hungary

The constitutional court exemplifies how Orbán can challenge Magyar, as all 15 justices have been appointed by Fidesz, including a former Fidesz defense minister. The Curia, Hungary’s supreme court, is led by András Varga, appointed by the Fidesz-controlled parliament.

Any legislation the Magyar government attempts could be rejected by these courts. “Due to the Supreme Court’s partiality or at least its president, and the constitutional court, this will be a very tough battle for Tisza,” stated Adrienn Laczó, a former judge who resigned in November 2024, protesting the lack of judicial independence.

Moreover, in December, Orbán’s lawmakers enhanced the veto power of President Sulyok, who was appointed in 2024 for a five-year term.

“Orbán has been planning for the worst-case scenario in case he loses,” said Kim Lane Scheppele, a constitutional law and elections professor at Princeton University. She noted that the constitutional amendment passed in December would “make it nearly impossible for a new parliament to impeach or remove the president.”

The president, in the interim, can stall legislation by returning it to parliament or referring it to the constitutional court, which could declare it unconstitutional, potentially derailing Tisza’s reform efforts.

Scheppele compared this situation to Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s challenges in Poland, where his reform attempts face the veto power of President Karol Nawrocki, who is aligned with the nationalist conservative Law and Justice party.

Funny how Orbán’s legal chess game is like watching a cat play with a mouse, only in this case, the mouse is the future of Hungary 🇭🇺. Guess the new guy’s gonna need a miracle or a really good bottle of wine to navigate this maze! 🍷

Seems like Orbán’s really thought this one through—who needs a fair fight when you can just stack the judges like a deck of cards? 🎴 Good luck to the next poor sap trying to govern with that lot! 😂

Looks like Orbán’s playing chess while the rest are stuck on checkers… who knew judicial independence was just a fancy term for “good luck, mate!” 😏🃏

Just what every aspiring leader needs: a judicial landscape rigged like a game of chess where the only pieces left are the ones Orbán handpicked. 🎭 Good luck navigating that minefield, mate!

Seems like Viktor’s ensuring his successor has all the freedom of a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Must be a new trend in “democratic” governance—who needs opposition when you can just stack the courts? 😂

Isn’t it charming how Orbán has turned Hungary into his own personal chessboard? With all those pawns in place, I suppose governance has become a lovely game of “try and fail” for anyone who dares to take over. 😂

  9. Looks like Orbán’s been playing chess while everyone else is stuck on checkers—who knew constitutional amendments could be the new Hungarian pastime? 🤔🕵️‍♂️

Seems like Orbán’s really thought this one through—nothing like stacking the deck to ensure a smooth transition, eh? 🎩 It’s almost like he’s playing chess while everyone else is still figuring out checkers. 🤷‍♂️

The Devil’s Pills: The Lady of Elche

In 1990, 36 years ago, I released a book titled The Devil, the Evil Syndrome, co-authored with a Galician writer, with whom I never collaborated again. The title’s relevance today lies in the term The Evil Syndrome. Back then, I found it intriguing how people in trials confessed to actions supposedly influenced by negative forces, yet often, the consumption of mood-altering pills was a recu
