Heathrow’s Chief Executive, Thomas Woldbye, praised the efforts of airport staff in handling the recent disruption caused by a power outage. Speaking to the BBC on Saturday, Woldbye emphasized that the fire responsible for the incident occurred outside the airport, but Heathrow had to manage its consequences.
“I don’t know of any airport that has a back-up power supply capable of handling an outage of this scale within minutes,” Woldbye stated, adding that a similar situation would likely impact other airports in the same way.
He expressed hope that the ongoing U.K. investigation would help improve Heathrow’s resilience, assuring that the airport is fully committed to working with all stakeholders to conduct a thorough review.
British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander underscored the importance of understanding the cause of the power failure. “It is crucial that we determine how this issue occurred and ensure that such a vital piece of national infrastructure remains stable,” she said.
The incident occurred when a fire broke out Thursday evening at a nearby electrical station, leading to a power outage that brought Europe’s busiest airport to a halt on Friday. While operations were resuming by Saturday, many passengers still faced delays and cancellations, according to reports.
The disruption led to the cancellation of over 1,000 flights, impacting tens of thousands of travelers. This ranks among the most significant disruptions to air travel in recent years.
