Hasselt (Eurotoday) – AWV is carrying out roadworks in Alken (N722) and Stevoort (Runkstersteenweg) until December 2025, leading to significant traffic congestion. Traffic is restricted to one direction, forcing drivers onto the N80 Expressway and Kuringersteenweg. AWV is adjusting traffic lights, but a quick solution is unlikely.
The Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV) is working on the road between Sint-Truiden and Sint-Lambrechts-Herk. They are improving safety for cyclists and installing a new sewer system. While traffic can move from Hasselt to Alken, the reverse direction is closed.
Officials have advised local residents to take alternative routes. Additionally, the city of Hasselt is conducting roadworks in Stevoort. Vehicles can travel from Hasselt to Stevoort, but not in the opposite direction, causing further traffic disruptions. Although cyclists can use both roads, car traffic remains heavily impacted, frustrating many commuters.
How will AWV & Hasselt address traffic congestion until 2025?
Due to the roadworks, many drivers are diverting onto the blank”>N80 Expressway to reach Hasselt, leading to severe congestion. Traffic issues on Kuringersteenweg are worsening the situation.
With the roadworks scheduled to continue until December 2025, authorities are adjusting traffic light settings to help ease congestion. Officials recommend that commuters plan their trips in advance, consider carpooling, or use public transport to reduce traffic pressure.
The Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV) acknowledged that the simultaneous roadworks in Alken and Stevoort are an unfortunate coincidence. They recognize public frustration and are working on possible solutions, though alternatives are limited due to ongoing construction on potential detour routes.
We cannot create diversions due to the various works,
said Zoe Debbaut.
AWV is attempting to mitigate congestion by adjusting traffic lights near the Ikea store in Hasselt. A trial over the weekend was unsuccessful, but they plan to test different traffic light settings to find a better solution.
Significant traffic delays are expected to continue for the foreseeable future. AWV stated that with all potential detour roads also under construction, immediate relief is not possible. However, they will keep exploring measures to alleviate congestion while roadworks are ongoing.

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “infrastructure progress” quite like a two-year traffic jam. I suppose the locals can use their newfound meditation skills while stuck in their cars – a real win-win! 🚗💨
