Guy D’haeseleer, leader of Forza Ninove, announced a historic evening. His party received 47.4 percent of the votes, resulting in a narrow majority of 18 out of 35 seats. D’haeseleer stated that the city will now be led by someone who has the greatest trust among the population.
What are the implications of Guy D’haeseleer’s election as Ninove’s far-right mayor?
Former mayor Tania De Jonghe from Positief Ninove congratulated the new mayor for winning an absolute majority, which she called impressive. She also shared worries about difficulties that might arise with the new leadership. While the ceremony went on without issues, around fifty residents from the “054” group protested outside by handing out pamphlets.
D’haeseleer has promised to follow through on the plans of his far-right party, Forza Ninove. In his first speech to the city council, he said they would keep the promises made during the election. He highlighted that voters chose them for a safe, clean, well-run Ninove. D’haeseleer wants to focus on safety and will meet with the police chief next week to discuss extending the police station hours in the evenings and on weekends. He also plans to review their spending to ensure that funded projects are effective.
