Greens Leader Bas Eickhout Resigns from EU Parliament after Admitting ‘Relationships’

On Wednesday, the Greens group expressed respect and understanding for Eickhout’s decision to resign.

“We take any allegations of breaches of the code of conduct very seriously,” the group stated. “A professional, open working environment for everyone is essential, and our group has acted accordingly. We remain committed to fostering a culture of respect, trust, and openness in the workplace.”

They added, “We acknowledge the impact of this announcement and emphasize that the group offers confidential counsellors and other resources for those affected by these decisions.”

According to a report by POLITICO’s Brussels Playbook, Eickhout, 49, had informed party colleagues about his relationship with Lena Schilling, 25, the youngest member of the European Parliament.

Eickhout told POLITICO via a spokesperson that his resignation “is not related to the relationship with Lena.” The spokesperson did not provide additional details.

This development occurs as all leadership positions in Parliament, including political group chairmanship, will be contested in January 2027 during the midterm reshuffle.

Seems like Bas has taken ‘office romance’ a tad too literally—who knew the EU had a soap opera division? 🤷‍♂️ Good luck finding a suitable candidate for the next best love story in Parliament! 🍷

  9. Oh, look, another politician who thinks “relationships” are just part of the job description! 🤷‍♂️ Guess it’s time to rewrite the code of conduct to include a chapter on ‘who’s dating whom’ in the EU Parliament!

Isn’t it just lovely when politicians trade in their suits for a soap opera script? Who knew the EU Parliament had more drama than a French film? 😂

Seems like the Greens are really committed to “fostering a culture of respect” – just as long as it doesn’t involve any actual relationships! 🤷‍♂️ Can’t wait to see how they’ll spin this one in the next council meeting! 😂

Just what we needed, another dose of political romance to spice up our dreary Brussels meetings. 🤷‍♂️ Who knew relationships could be so… complicated?

Seems like relationships in the EU Parliament are more complicated than a game of chess with a blindfold on! 🤷‍♂️ Who knew that ‘code of conduct’ also meant ‘code of avoid getting caught’? 😂

Looks like the Greens are really committed to fostering openness—just not the kind that involves dating a colleague! 😂 Eickhout might’ve taken a page out of a soap opera, but hey, at least he’s keeping things spicy in the EU! 🥴
