The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported multiple overnight strikes on Friday in the Jabalya Al Balad and An Nazla neighborhoods. Around 900 people fled to the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood and western Gaza City.
Safe Passage, More Aid
The UN and partners reiterated the obligation to protect civilians, including humanitarian workers and those who cannot or choose not to move, under international law. OCHA emphasized the need for safe, voluntary return of those fleeing and access to aid and basic services for all. Supplies must enter the Gaza Strip through all crossings, and humanitarians must have sustained access to deliver aid.
Hospitals Under Strain
As strikes intensify, casualties overwhelm hospital emergency departments. Humanitarians warned that expansion of military operations threatens the healthcare system. Nearly half of all hospitals and field hospitals are in Gaza City, covering 40% of the enclave’s bed capacity, with southern facilities operating beyond capacity. Restoring healthcare access is crucial to prevent more deaths.
Sudan: UN Rights Office Alarmed by Killings in El Fasher
Brutal RSF attacks in Sudan’s North Darfur left at least 89 dead, according to the UN human rights office, OHCHR. The RSF fights the Sudanese Armed Forces for control. OHCHR reported RSF attacks in El Fasher and Abu Shouk camp, resulting in at least 89 civilian deaths over ten days ending August 20.
Apparent Summary Executions
OHCHR expressed horror at 16 recent killings appearing as summary executions. Most victims were from the African Zaghawa tribe, killed in Abu Shouk camp. In another case, a victim was killed after identifying as from the African Berti tribe. El Fasher faces a humanitarian crisis with a risk of famine after a prolonged siege. OHCHR condemned attacks on UN aid convoys that exacerbate the civilian crisis.
Ending Impunity for Violence Critical for Rohingya in Myanmar
OHCHR called for ending impunity against the Rohingya in Myanmar, ensuring their rights to security, citizenship, and equality. The predominantly Muslim Rohingya suffer from violence eight years after a military crackdown. Over 700,000 fled to Bangladesh since August 2017. Ending impunity and securing Rohingya rights is vital to breaking the violence cycle. OHCHR urged the international community to increase humanitarian funding for the Rohingya’s basic needs and accountability.
