EU-UK Summit Delayed Following Keir Starmer’s Resignation

The United Kingdom aimed to use the meeting as a platform to initiate discussions for integrating closer into the EU’s economic sphere, with details of the plan expected to be confirmed at the meeting.

Andy Burnham, the Manchester regional mayor, is anticipated to succeed Starmer and could assume office by July 17 or 18 if there’s no leadership contest.

The summit date was established last week when Starmer met Costa at the G7 summit in France.

At a press conference during the EU-Moldova summit on Monday, Costa stated: “We have been working diligently and with enthusiasm to quickly hold our second summit.”

“Now, we certainly need to postpone it,” Costa continued. “But we are reevaluating the chance for this new summit. I hope his successor will continue on this positive path to renew our relationship with the United Kingdom.”

At the same event, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen commended Keir Starmer, noting his work in an atmosphere of “trust.”
