A series of drone-related disruptions has recently affected Europe’s airspace, with European leaders attributing violations over Danish, Estonian, Norwegian, Romanian, and Polish airspaces to the Kremlin. Merz likened the violations to Cold War airspace incursions but noted their increased frequency in recent weeks. He described these actions as espionage attempts and efforts to unsettle the public, emphasizing a need for a measured response.
Last week, European leaders discussed a European Commission proposal to establish a “drone wall” along the eastern border of the EU. Major countries like Germany and France, however, are hesitant to delegate such defense issues to the EU, opting for national control and NATO’s involvement.
Merz highlighted the unprecedented scale of the current threat and the collaborative efforts within the EU and NATO to address it. He stated that no drones spotted so far have been armed and noted that some incidents were caused by individuals in Germany building drones in acts of imitation.
