On Thursday, December 5, a delegation of nine French-speaking journalists from four sub-Saharan African nations visited the European Newsroom (enr) at the Belga News Agency’s offices in Brussels.
The visiting group comprised media professionals from Cameroon, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Chad, representing various platforms including print, radio, and television.
The journalists engaged in discussions about how the European Newsroom operates with its network of 23 news agencies from EU member states and candidate countries. Topics of interest included innovative media formats that enrich the newsroom’s daily content, fostering a lively exchange between the visitors and enr representatives.
Victoria Becker and Tim Kohnen from the enr provided valuable insights into its objectives of promoting collaboration among Europe’s news agencies. They highlighted initiatives such as the production of weekly Key Stories and the organization of joint interviews and workshops, demonstrating how cooperative efforts bolster the dissemination of trustworthy and diverse journalism throughout Europe.
The visiting journalists also contributed to the dialogue by sharing their experiences and practices from their home countries, paving the way for a cross-cultural discussion that deepened mutual understanding and sparked ideas for potential future collaboration between journalists in Europe and Africa.
The visit, coordinated by the European External Action Service (EEAS), underscored its dedication to fostering connections with regions and nations outside the European Union. As the EU’s diplomatic arm, the EEAS aims to provide insights into the workings of the Union, promoting informed discussions and strengthening international relationships.
