France to Contribute Less Than Anticipated to the EU in 2026

Paris – In 2026, France will boost its contribution to the European budget to 5.7 billion euros, down from an initially planned increase of 7.3 billion euros, as stated by Public Accounts Minister Amélie de Montchalin.

“We’ve implemented a three-part reform that will reduce the French revenue contribution to the European Union by 1.6 billion euros next year,” the minister said during a Finance Committee hearing in the National Assembly.

“This is a technical negotiation (…). The European Commission isn’t an external entity with which we have no negotiations. It’s a discussion we’ve had with all net contributing states,” she added, following the government of François Bayrou’s announcement of a savings plan exceeding 43 billion euros.

The measures include significant cuts to state spending, alongside an increase in revenue and production support. (July 16, 2025)

Fancy that! France, the land of fine wine and cheese, now serving up budget cuts instead of croissants—who knew fiscal delicacies could be so… austere? 🍷💸 #BonAppétit

Oh, how generous of France to “contribute” less while still polishing its beret! Must be nice to negotiate a discount on the EU bill while claiming it’s all part of a grand strategy. 🇫🇷💸

Oh là là, only in France do we negotiate a budget cut like it’s a fine wine tasting—less is definitely more, they say! 🍷💸

  4. Looks like France’s idea of “contributing” is more like a game of budget limbo—how low can we go? 🎩💸 Just remember, every euro counts… unless you’re French, apparently! 😂

Oh, magnifique! France is playing a game of “how low can we go” with EU contributions – must be nice to have a budget that’s as flexible as a Parisian yoga class! 😂💸

Oh là là, what a surprise! France is pulling a classic “less is more” on the EU budget—maybe they’re saving up for another round of croissants? 🥐💸

Oh brilliant, less money for the EU, just what we need! Who knew saving a few billion could be so “technical”? 🤷‍♂️💶

Oh, brilliant! Less cash for the EU means more croissants for us, right? 🍷💸 Just what we need—a masterclass in budget cuts while keeping the champagne flowing! 😏
