Paris – In 2026, France will boost its contribution to the European budget to 5.7 billion euros, down from an initially planned increase of 7.3 billion euros, as stated by Public Accounts Minister Amélie de Montchalin.
“We’ve implemented a three-part reform that will reduce the French revenue contribution to the European Union by 1.6 billion euros next year,” the minister said during a Finance Committee hearing in the National Assembly.
“This is a technical negotiation (…). The European Commission isn’t an external entity with which we have no negotiations. It’s a discussion we’ve had with all net contributing states,” she added, following the government of François Bayrou’s announcement of a savings plan exceeding 43 billion euros.
The measures include significant cuts to state spending, alongside an increase in revenue and production support. (July 16, 2025)
