Bratislava – Slovakia’s future lies within the EU, as there are no alternatives. However, reforms are necessary to ensure the Union remains strong and competitive, stated Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) during TA3’s discussion program In Politics. He also called for the resignation of the EU’s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallasová, according to TASR.
“The European Union must make decisions. We need to determine whether we will be active participants or merely observers of global events,” emphasized Robert Fico. He expressed concerns about the Union’s declining competitiveness, remarking that the EU seems preoccupied with hostility towards Russia.
“Changes are imminent in Europe. If the EU fails to recognize its issues, it will be unable to respond effectively,” he added.
With nearly 500 million residents, the EU possesses significant economic power and potential to emerge as a superpower. He criticized Kaja Kallasová.
“We need a new High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Kallasová must be replaced. This is the first time I am stating this openly. I have voiced many critical opinions about her. We are currently facing an international crisis, and Europe lacks a coherent response. It takes us too long to issue statements on issues like Venezuela. Strong leadership is required, not just from individual nations,” Fico declared.
He expressed support for a potential EU coalition focused on enhancing competitiveness, addressing illegal migration, or lowering energy prices.
“The Slovak Republic’s future is in the European Union; we have no other choice. I predict the EU will undergo substantial changes soon. The question is whether we will navigate this transition weakened by internal conflicts and uncertainty, or if we will assert our sovereignty,” the Prime Minister concluded. (11 January)
“We are in a crisis, in an international crisis, Europe is not able to react, we do not have our own international positions.” Robert Fico
