Strasbourg – The European Parliament has approved the new EU Commission with a vote tally of 370 in favor and 282 against.
Former Swedish EU Minister Jessika Roswall will oversee the environment and water resilience in the newly formed EU Commission, which is set to begin its term on December 1.
“I feel very positive. These are challenging times, and it’s encouraging to receive such strong backing from the Parliament. We are all eager to get started and truly at the starting line,” Roswall stated.
Her inaugural assignment as Commissioner will take place this Sunday when she heads to Saudi Arabia to participate in a conference focused on water issues. Following that, she will engage in complex negotiations between the EU Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers concerning a proposed one-year delay in implementing controversial new regulations aimed at preventing deforestation of rainforests.
“It is crucial that we arrive at a conclusion and achieve an agreement before Christmas,” emphasized the incoming Environment Commissioner.
The voting results in the Parliament were notably close, with a mere 88-vote margin, marking one of the narrowest approvals for an EU Commission in history.
In favor of the newly appointed assembly were the Moderates, Christian Democrats, Centre Party, Liberals, and Social Democrats, while the Green Party chose to abstain.
Opposition came from the Left Party and the Sweden Democrats.
“This is the most right-leaning commission we have ever witnessed,” remarked Jonas Sjöstedt (V).
