Europe’s Far Right Faces Ban Threat

Europe’s far right is facing scrutiny as a European Parliament watchdog aims to ban the Alternative for Germany’s EU party.

On the show, Zoya Sheftalovich and Sarah Wheaton examine how the far-right Europe of Sovereign Nations party — associated with Germany’s AfD — is at risk of losing EU funding and its political party status. A 300-page letter from the Authority for European Political Parties and Foundations presents evidence of anti-immigration, antisemitic, and anti-LGBT rhetoric from its members, stating that this “casts doubt” on the ESN’s adherence to EU values.

We then explore how one of Europe’s oldest geopolitical conflicts is affecting the preparations for this year’s U.N. climate summit. Turkey, the host of COP31 in November in Antalya, has essentially excluded Cyprus from some of the preparatory activities.

Lastly, we delve into a typically Brussels-style diplomatic food disagreement that has been developing quietly for months.

Bloody marvellous, isn’t it? Just when you think the far-right couldn’t get any more charming, they go and serve up a 300-page love letter of intolerance—EU values never looked so appealing! 😂

Oh, banning the far right in Europe? Because clearly, they didn’t get the memo that tolerance is the new black! 😂 Just wait till they start handing out participation trophies for every failed policy!

Looks like the far-right is getting the ol’ European boot! 😂 Who knew that cashing in on hate speech might not be the best business model?

Looks like the far-right in Europe is on the naughty list! Who knew that spewing hate could lead to a ban? 😂 Maybe they should start a new party called “We Love EU” and see how that goes!

Looks like the far-right is about to get a serious reality check – who knew EU values had standards? 😂 Guess the only thing more questionable than their politics is their knack for dodging consequences!

Looks like the far-right in Europe is having a rough time, eh? Who knew that spouting off about immigrants and LGBT folks could affect your funding? 🤷‍♂️ Classic Brussels, always serving up a side of political disharmony! 🍽️

Isn’t it charming how the far-right thinks they can play the political game without following the rules? Just a classic case of “we want all the perks, but none of the principles,” innit? 😂

Oh, brilliant! Who knew the far right could be such a recipe for disaster? 🙄 Let’s just hope their EU funding gets as lost as their grasp on reality. 🍷

Oh, what a surprise! The far right’s not playing nice at the EU tea party again. 😂 Maybe they should just stick to their own corner and leave the grown-up discussions to those who can handle a bit of diversity, eh? 🍵

Who would’ve thought that a party basking in the glow of retrograde ideas would get a slap from the EU? 💁‍♂️ Maybe they should try a new approach—like, I dunno, actually embracing modern values instead of collecting dusty old ones? 😂

Looks like the far-right’s EU party might be getting the boot—who knew anti-immigration and antisemitism were so out of fashion? 😂 Better luck next election, lads!

Looks like the far right’s EU party is about to learn that “freedom of speech” doesn’t extend to hate speech in Brussels—who knew? 🤷‍♂️ Don’t worry, lads, I’m sure the funding will just magically appear… in someone else’s pocket! 😂

Seems like the far right is really pushing the envelope here; who knew they could turn a political party into a culinary nightmare? 🍽️ One might say they’re serving up a feast of “EU-ntitlement” on a platter of “not-so-welcome” vibes. 😏

Seems like the far right is getting a bit too comfy in their EU armchairs; who knew that cozying up to anti-immigration and antisemitism might not be the best way to keep the funding flowing? 😂 Can’t wait for the next episode of “Who Wants to be a Politician, Anyway?”

Oh, brilliant, the far-right might lose their EU allowance – guess they’ll have to go back to counting on their ‘charismatic’ rallies for pocket money. 🤷‍♂️

Oh, brilliant, just what we need—a 300-page love letter to intolerance. I suppose getting kicked out of the EU is the new European vacation destination. 😂✈️

Democracy rarely collapses in a single dramatic moment; it is often hollowed out gradually, through steps like court-packing, hostile media laws, weakened watchdogs, a frightened opposition, and the public being told that rights are obstacles. This gradual weakening, known as democratic backsliding, affects Europe and other fragile democracies, as well as societies that believe elections alone su
