Purnell served as Britain’s culture secretary under Tony Blair before Burnham, leaving parliament in 2010 after an unsuccessful attempt to unseat Blair’s successor, Gordon Brown, the previous year.
In 2013, he became the BBC’s director of strategy, later joining the lobbying firm Flint Global as chief executive in 2024. His financial interests in Flint may require assessment under conflict-of-interest regulations.
Purnell has been a long-time ally of Burnham in Westminster, playing a key role in Burnham’s entry into parliament at 31 in 2001.
He advised Burnham, who was then a special adviser, to consult Blair’s Political Secretary, Sally Morgan, about running for a parliamentary seat.
Burnham acknowledged Purnell in his 2024 book “Head North,” describing him as “one of the clearest political thinkers” he had known and expressed gratitude for Purnell’s belief in him.
Burnham is anticipated to be the sole viable candidate for Labour leadership following Keir Starmer’s announcement of resignation on Monday.
