STRASBOURG – The European Parliament committee asserts that all sectors must play a role in reducing emissions and attaining climate neutrality. Members of the European Parliament emphasize the necessity for the EU to maintain ambitious objectives, highlighting an “urgent need” to cease reliance on fossil fuels.
This week, EU ministers reiterated the EU’s intent to assume a “central role” at COP30, a stance consistent with previous years. Nonetheless, EU member states have yet to reach solid agreements on emission reductions targeted for 2035, with the deadline for these climate ambitions having already lapsed.
The EU aims to establish a climate target for 2040, with discussions scheduled for Thursday. The proposal suggests that emissions in 2040 should be reduced by 90 percent compared to 1990 levels. The EU has previously committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
