WASHINGTON, June 5 – Eurotoday — NASA Air Leak Updates confirm that astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) were ordered to shelter in their docked SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft today as a worsening air leak threatens the structural integrity of the orbiting laboratory. The directive, issued early Friday, requires the four-member Crew-12 team to don their pressure suits and remain in a “safe haven” state as Russian cosmonauts work to locate and patch a leak in the Zvezda service module.
Crisis in the Russian Segment
The persistent air leak, located within the PrK vestibule—a transfer tunnel in the Russian section of the station—has reached “high risk” levels according to mission control. While the area had shown signs of stabilization earlier this year, pressure data recorded in early May indicated a significant increase in the leak rate, now estimated at approximately one pound per day.
“Out of an abundance of caution, NASA directed the crew members to wait inside the docked spacecraft while others repaired a leak,”
an agency representative confirmed. This protocol ensures the crew remains protected if the pressure loss within the module accelerates beyond the ability of ground support systems to compensate.
The Repair Operation
Russian cosmonauts are currently conducting manual repair operations, utilizing specialized sealants and mechanical patches to seal the cracks within the transfer tunnel. This specific section of the Zvezda module has been a source of recurring technical concern for nearly six years, with various repair attempts performed throughout the station’s service life.
Engineers at NASA and Roscosmos are monitoring sensor data in real-time to assess the effectiveness of the patch. The focus of the mission is to stabilize the module’s atmospheric pressure, allowing the station to return to normal operations and ending the need for the current evacuation protocols.
