Brussels (Eurotoday) – European Parliament’s Gender Equality Week will focus on women’s empowerment, digital safety, and gender equality.
European Parliament’s committees and delegations are set to discuss how to improve women’s empowerment in the digital world as part of the fifth European Gender Equality Week. The discussions will run from 9 to 15 December. Each year, the European Parliament arranges Gender Equality Week to evaluate progress, emphasise achievements, and identify new measures to advance the rights of women and girls and achieve gender equality.
What are the key themes of gender equality week?
As reported by the press of the EU Parliament, the fifth European Gender Equality Week will include several discussions and events under the common theme of “The Digital World: Safety and Empowerment”. Lawmakers will address gender equality problems in different policy areas, concentrating on the opportunities as well as challenges faced by women online.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola stressed recent legislative accomplishments in the field of gender equality, including the Directive on Violence Against Women. President Metsola expressed that work on equality can go further, by concentrating on the digital skills and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education of women and girls, and enhancing their safety in online and offline spaces. “The European Parliament is committed to achieving a fair and equal Europe for all. Every woman must feel safe and empowered wherever they go, be it offline or online”, stated President Metsola.
EU Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality will hold several occasions, including a hearing with the Civil Liberties Committee to examine how to secure gender equality and women’s rights in the digital space.
Moreover, EU Parliament Vice-President Sberna and EU Parliament’s Chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Lina Gálvez will join Ewa Kopacz, Vice-President of the EU Parliament chairing the High-Level Group on Gender Equality and Diversity, and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Ex-Prime Minister of Spain, in an online discussion on eradicating violence against women and entrusting them in the digital world.
