EU lawmakers advised to leave phones at home for China trip

A Parliament spokesperson stated that “all necessary preventive and reactive measures are in place to ensure the security and safety of MEPs and [European Parliament] staff during official missions,” with “briefings, training and assistance regarding security” provided to both lawmakers and officials.

Previously, the European Parliament has utilized burner phones and security pouches to safeguard devices like mobile phones, including on a visit to Hungary, as reported by POLITICO.

Other EU institutions have strengthened their cyberespionage defenses. A senior official, speaking anonymously regarding security policy, informed POLITICO’s Brussels Playbook that the Council of the EU had guidelines advising “no electronics are taken to the U.S. or China … electronics brought back must be wiped” if travel with them is unavoidable.

According to a report by the Financial Times last year, Commission officials traveling to the United States have been supplied with burner phones and basic laptops to counteract espionage risks.
