Creating a Safer Online Environment for Children: Interview with European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen

Ensuring a secure digital environment for children was emphasized by Henna Virkkunen, the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, in an interview with the European Newsroom (enr) in Brussels, which focused on online child protection.

The European Commission has targeted major adult websites, revealing initial findings that Pornhub, Stripchat, XNXX, and XVideos are violating the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA). Following proceedings initiated in May of last year, Brussels has concluded that these platforms are not adequately protecting minors from explicit materials, citing particularly ineffective age verification systems that leave underage users vulnerable.

The Commission is also investigating Snapchat to assess its compliance with the DSA, prompted by worries regarding potential risks for minors on the app, such as grooming and the illegal distribution of drugs, vapes, and alcohol.

Journalists from partner agencies of the European Newsroom, including ANSA (Italy), CTK (Czech Republic), dpa (Germany), EFE (Spain), TT (Sweden), and others, were granted an exclusive opportunity to directly question Virkkunen about her latest communications on child safety and online platform regulation under the DSA.

Additionally, reporters inquired about the EU’s age verification application, currently in the testing phase, as well as broader topics like addictive platform designs, the obligation of social media firms to protect minors, and the proposed “chat control” measures that have sparked considerable privacy debates throughout Europe.

Oh sure, because a chat control measure sounds like the perfect way to protect kids online—who knew the solution was just more bureaucracy? 🤷‍♂️ Better get the kids back to reading books, eh?📚

Just what we needed, another EU official saving the children while the rest of us are busy figuring out how to pronounce “Virkkunen” correctly. 🤔 Guess the age verification system is about as effective as my grandma’s old lock on her biscuit tin! 🍪

Seems like the EU is cracking down harder than a Bavarian beer hall during Oktoberfest! 🍻 Who knew keeping kids safe online would turn into a digital witch hunt for adult sites? 🤔

  5. So, the EU is finally hunting down adult sites like it’s the digital version of whack-a-mole. Who knew ensuring kids are safe online would involve a game of ‘let’s see who can dodge the age verification’? 🙄💻

Right, because nothing screams “safer internet” like the EU swooping in to babysit us all, eh? 😂 Who knew that the solution to dodgy websites was just a bunch of bureaucrats in Brussels having a chinwag!

Looks like the EU is finally stepping up, eh? Who knew that making the internet a safe playground for kids would require a whole conference and a lot of finger-pointing at adult sites? 😂

  8. Typical bureaucratic dance, isn’t it? Just what we needed—more regulations to protect our kids from the internet, because clearly, it’s not like parents have any responsibility these days. 🙄💼

Isn’t it delightful to see our top brass chasing after adult sites like it’s a game of digital Whac-A-Mole? 🎯 Meanwhile, kids are outsmarting the age verification systems like they’re in an episode of “Wipeout”! 😂

  10. Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—another round of EU bureaucracy to ensure our little ones are safe from the big bad internet. 🦸‍♂️ Because clearly, age verification will stop kids from clicking ‘yes’ faster than I can say “bloody nonsense!”

Creating a safer online playground for kids, eh? Brilliant plan, Henna! Just what we need—more red tape for the adult sites while kids find a way around it like it’s a game of hide and seek. 🙄

Oh joy, yet another bureaucratic deep dive into the world of online child protection—because clearly, the best way to keep kids safe is to have a committee discuss it over a coffee break in Brussels. 🙄

  13. Seems like the EU is finally waking up from its digital slumber to babysit the internet – can’t wait for my tax euros to fund another round of age-verification games! 🎭💸

  14. Isn’t it charming how the EU is finally waking up to the fact that sites like Pornhub might not be the best babysitters? 🙄 Meanwhile, we’re all just waiting for that age verification system to be as robust as a wet napkin!

So, it seems we’ve got the EU on a mission to save kids from the perils of the internet, one age verification system at a time. 🤔 Who knew Brussels was the new superhero headquarters? 🦸‍♂️

Just when you thought the EU was too busy with cheese regulations to tackle something serious, here comes Henna Virkkunen, waving her magic wand at the internet like a parent finding out about a bad report card. 🌍✨ I mean, who knew age verification was more complicated than deciphering a Berlin subway map?😂

Brilliant, isn’t it? The EU’s finally tackling the big bad wolves of the internet after years of letting kids roam free in a digital playground—who knew age verification on porn sites was a hot topic? 😏

  18. Oh, brilliant move, Henna! Targeting adult sites while the kids are still figuring out how to dodge those pesky age verifications—classic bureaucratic finesse! 🤦‍♂️

Oh, splendid, because what we really needed was another high-level chat about keeping kids safe online – just what the EU does best, right? 😏 I mean, who doesn’t love a good ol’ age verification system that’s about as effective as a chocolate teapot? 🍫🫖
