The European Union is prepared to finalize a tariff agreement with the United States, as stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen prior to an important negotiation meeting today.
European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic is on his way to Washington to meet with American officials, aiming to secure a trade deal before the July 9 deadline set by Donald Trump.
If no agreement is reached by that date, the President could potentially increase customs tariffs on EU imports to 20% or even 50%, as he indicated in May.
“We seek a resolution through negotiation, but we are simultaneously preparing for the scenario where a satisfactory agreement is not reached,” von der Leyen stated at a press conference in Aarhus, Denmark.
She emphasized, “We will protect European interests if needed (…), all options remain on the table.”
In early May, the EU warned of imposing taxes on American imports valued at 95 billion euros, including vehicles and aircraft, should trade negotiations with Trump fail.
Last week, the Commission announced it received a proposal from the US, which is currently under review.
“Our target is July 9,” von der Leyen expressed today from Aarhus. “This is a significant task, given the substantial volume of trade between the European Union and the US, which totals 1.5 trillion euros,” she added. (3/7/25)
