Czech Republic Receives 28.5 Billion Crowns from EU for Crisis Preparedness
Prague – The European Union has allocated an additional 28.5 billion crowns to the Czech Republic to enhance its preparedness for various crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the influx of Ukrainian refugees. This funding, part of the REACT-EU program, is intended for the modernization of healthcare facilities, improvement of social services, enhancement of the integrated rescue system, and support for Ukrainian refugees. Over 600 projects have benefited from this funding, as reported by the Ministry of Regional Development (MRR) in a press release on their website.
REACT-EU was established to aid recovery from the COVID-19 crisis, directing funds allocated to the Czech Republic to the Integrated Regional Operational Program (IROP), which is managed by the MRR for the 2014-2020 period. A special assistance package for Ukrainian refugees, known as FAST-CARE, was launched in 2022 under this program.
Of the total funding, approximately 22.5 billion crowns were earmarked for healthcare facilities, 5.4 billion crowns for the integrated rescue system, and 2.1 billion crowns for social services. Additionally, about 412 million crowns were specifically allocated for assistance to Ukrainian refugees.
The majority of the funds supported projects in Prague, totaling 6.3 billion crowns across 63 projects. However, the Moravian-Silesian Region saw the highest number of projects funded by REACT-EU, with 66 projects receiving nearly three billion crowns. In contrast, the Karlovy Vary Region received the least support, with 16 projects funded for a total of 586.6 million crowns. (December 4)
