Yet the game refused to be an afterthought. England’s 6-4 victory over France secured the men’s team their best World Cup finish since 1966 and their best performance in a tournament outside England. It was a result constructed on an astonishing first half, then safeguarded through a second half that became nearly uncontrollable.
Saka turns disappointment into authority
