Acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described it as the largest ballistic attack during the war. Ukraine’s air force ranked it slightly lower, calling it one of the largest and the fourth such strike on Kyiv in the past five weeks. They reported shooting down 18 of the 41 missiles and nearly all on a ballistic path.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that the strikes damaged residential buildings, a supermarket, and a dormitory in the city. Ukrainian officials reported at least one fatality and 15 injuries in Kyiv due to the attack.
Russia’s defense ministry claimed it targeted defense industry sites and logistics centers in Kyiv.
The interceptor shortage has intensified since the war with Iran, depleting U.S. and allied Patriot stocks. Zelenskyy mentioned Ukraine requires 300 Patriots for the upcoming winter. U.S. President Donald Trump recently proposed allowing Ukraine to produce the missiles under license, though the details are yet to be finalized.
On July 13, nine European nations agreed to support Ukraine’s initiative to develop a domestic anti-ballistic system, with France permitting Ukraine to produce its Aster interceptors.
Ukrainian officials also urged the EU to resolve the impasse over a new sanctions package.
