During a walk through the Ukrainian capital, Germany’s ambassador Heiko Thoms explains to Gordon Repinski how the Ukrainians’ pursuit of normalcy has become a deliberate act of defiance against Russian aggression.
Thoms reflects on the toughest winter in decades. Weeks of sub-zero temperatures, systematic attacks on energy infrastructure, and constant generator noise were meant to wear down the population. Instead, these war crimes strengthened the resolve to resist. The ambassador speaks of the enormous psychological and physical strain on his Ukrainian staff.
He also describes Ukraine’s rapid military and technological advancements, transforming from a security recipient to an innovation hub. Drone regiments, strikes on Russian supply lines, and the push of the “kill zone” demonstrate Kyiv’s momentum.
Despite military successes and preliminary negotiations, Thoms tempers unrealistic expectations of Ukraine’s quick EU accession by 2027, urging comprehensive reforms in rule of law and anti-corruption. He also warns Germany to learn from Ukraine’s resilience and innovation before facing a similar crisis itself.
