Driven by Hunger to Gaza, Amputees Become Collateral Damage

Mohammed Hassan was going to buy falafel when he saw a rocket heading towards him. He tried to escape but was caught in the blast, leading to the amputation of his foot. At Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, he stares at his bandaged leg.

In another part of the hospital, a child, Maryam Abu Alba, cries from pain after her home was affected by a bombing. Her leg was amputated, and metal plates were inserted into the other fractured one.

The UN’s Ochha reports that 4,500 new amputees in Gaza need prostheses, with existing cases requiring maintenance, while 24,000 injured individuals need rehabilitation. Health facilities are overwhelmed with patients needing surgeries and lack medical supplies, including anesthesia.

In May, as supply routes for UN convoys were disrupted, the number of aid distribution points decreased, causing many Palestinians to be harmed while searching for food amid shortages. A food security report confirms famine in Gaza, with half a million people living in dire conditions.

Ibrahim Abdel Nabi recalls searching for aid, only to be injured by an explosive. He received medical attention after a prolonged wait but endured multiple operations, malnutrition, and further amputations.

Despite his injuries, Mr. Nabi crafted a makeshift prosthesis to find food for his family, even though it caused pain and inflammation. His wife, assisting him, urges patience as he adapts to using the prosthesis.

Just another day in paradise, where the local delicacy comes with a side of amputation—bon appétit! 😏 If only our leaders spent as much time fixing the mess as they do fluffing their speeches over a nice cup of espresso.
