Czechia Remains Far Behind EU in Solar and Wind Energy Utilization

Prague – The Czech Republic is significantly trailing most EU nations in solar and wind energy utilization. While the European Union saw a 30 percent contribution from solar and wind to electricity generation last year, surpassing fossil fuel sources for the first time, the Czech Republic’s share stood at only 6.6 percent. Recent trends indicate a slowdown in the growth of solar energy, with wind energy facing an even more challenging situation, according to an analysis from the Ember institute obtained by CTK.

Electricity generation from solar energy in the Czech Republic increased to 4.4 terawatt hours (TWh) last year, up from 2.3 TWh in 2020. Although the participation of photovoltaic systems in production has doubled in the past five years, reaching six percent last year, the growth rate has recently diminished, the analysis shows.

“While solar energy generation expanded by roughly 0.8 TWh in 2025, the year-on-year share increase was lower than in 2024. This is concerning because the Czech Republic possesses significant untapped solar potential and is still beneath the EU average for renewable energy usage,” stated Ember analyst Tatiana Mindeková. She warned that without a renewed growth trajectory, the existing advancements might not contribute to a substantial transformation of the energy mix, putting the Czech Republic at risk of lagging behind the EU in energy sector transformation.

The Czech Republic’s performance in wind energy is even more concerning, with its contribution to domestic production stagnating at around one percent, compared to an EU average of nearly 17 percent last year.

The analysis highlights the effectiveness of combining wind and solar energy. “During the low wind conditions in spring 2025, solar energy effectively compensated, keeping the EU’s renewable share stable. However, the Czech Republic lacks this balance, relying solely on photovoltaics while wind energy remains stagnant. Wind energy is crucial for lowering electricity costs,” remarked Jiří Beranovský from the Czech Technical University in Prague (ČVUT). (22 January)

Seems like Czechia is playing a thrilling game of catch-up with a very slow horse—one percent wind energy? At this rate, they’ll be harnessing steam power before they hit EU averages! 😂

Looks like Czechia’s idea of renewable energy is still stuck on “loading…” while the rest of Europe is already streaming. 🤷‍♂️ At this rate, we might as well start selling solar panels as garden ornaments! 🌞💁‍♂️

Czechia clearly has a unique talent for taking the scenic route to the renewable energy party, while the rest of the EU is already dancing on the tables with solar and wind. Guess we prefer our energy like our pints—only a splash of the good stuff, eh? 🍻

It’s delightful to see Czechia embrace the renewable revolution at a leisurely stroll—6.6%? At this rate, I’ll be waiting for my solar-powered taxi until my retirement! 😂

  5. Seems like Czechia is on a slow stroll towards renewable energy while the rest of the EU is sprinting ahead. At this rate, we’ll need a solar-powered time machine to catch up! 🌞🚀

Looks like Czechia’s energy strategy is more stuck than a tram in a snowstorm. At this rate, we’ll be powering our homes with good intentions and a sprinkle of hope. 😂

  7. Looks like Czechia is still waiting for the sun to shine and the wind to blow in their favor—maybe they should consider holding an energy-themed party to boost those numbers! 😂

Czechia’s renewable energy strategy seems to be on a leisurely stroll while the rest of the EU is sprinting towards the finish line 🏃‍♂️💨. But hey, at least we’ve got a solid 6.6% – that’s almost a seventh of what we could be doing, right? 😏

  9. Seems like Czechia is playing a game of hide and seek with renewable energy—too bad they’re the ones hiding! ☀️💨 Might want to catch up before the neighbors start charging for the sun! 🌞

  10. Czechia’s renewable energy game is like a bad Euro pop song—plenty of flair but utterly missing the beat! At this rate, we might as well keep calling our wind turbines “decorative garden ornaments” 😂.

Looks like Czechia’s energy strategy is as ambitious as a snail in a marathon! 🐌 With wind and solar production numbers that make you wonder if they’re just practicing for a game of hopscotch instead of actually trying to catch up with the EU.

Czechia’s renewable energy strategy is about as ambitious as a sloth on a Sunday stroll. With a solar output that would make a lightbulb blush, it seems we’re still waiting for that proverbial train to leave the station. 😏🔋

  13. Seems like Czechia’s energy strategy is on the same train as a snail – slow and a bit lost, eh? 🚂💨 With the EU zooming ahead, we’re just here polishing our windmills and hoping for a breeze! 🌬️

Seems like the Czech Republic is still waiting for that “green revolution” to arrive, probably stuck in traffic behind a fossil fuel truck. 🚚💨 At this rate, by the time we catch up with the EU, we’ll be powering our toasters with coal! 😅

  15. Looks like Czechia’s energy strategy is about as innovative as a horse and cart in a Formula 1 race. At this rate, we might as well be relying on hand-cranked generators! 😂💡

Czechia’s energy strategy is so ahead of its time, it seems to have forgotten that the future is now – or maybe it’s just waiting for a bus that never comes? 😂

Canaan became the forefather of the peoples referred to in the Bible as the Canaanites.
