Brussels urges Slovenia to finalize public media funding reforms

Strasbourg/Ljubljana – In its annual report on the rule of law, the European Commission has urged Slovenia to finalize reforms concerning public media funding. Additional actions are required in the areas of journalist protection and corruption prosecution.

The Commission acknowledges that Slovenia has made some advancements in funding Radio-Television Slovenia (RTVS) and the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) since the previous report released last July, but challenges persist. Thus, further action is essential.

This year’s recommendations specifically highlight the need for Slovenia to enhance both legislative and non-legislative protections for journalists.

Regarding corruption, Brussels is calling on Slovenian authorities to implement more measures to improve the prosecution of corruption cases, including those at the highest levels.

On a positive note, Slovenia has fully complied with last year’s recommendations related to parliamentary inquiries and the increase in judges’ salaries.

The Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs stated that the report highlights significant progress made by Slovenia in all key areas over the past year. Slovenian Minister of Justice Andreja Katič noted that the country is moving in the right direction to bolster the rule of law. (July 8)
