Austrian Chancellor Urges EU to Lower Energy Prices Immediately

His push comes amid a series of remarks from EU leaders aiming to influence the meeting’s agenda, with French President Emmanuel Macron supporting joint debt and a European preference policy in an interview with various media outlets published Tuesday morning.

The Austrian chancellor’s comments mirror other leaders like Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, both of whom have urged the EU to eliminate environmental regulations they hold responsible for high energy prices.

“The approach we took with the Green Deal was certainly not sustainable: in Austria, for example, the reduction in CO2 emissions is ultimately primarily due to a decrease in production,” Stocker mentioned, referring to a landmark environmental package of regulations approved during the Commission’s previous mandate. “Becoming greener cannot be our goal; it means becoming poorer.”

The EU has already started to unwind parts of its environmental rulebook as part of a deregulation push supported by a majority of the bloc’s member countries. In joint discussion papers, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have advocated for speeding up that deregulation push and creating an “emergency brake” on new EU legislation.

“Fortunately, the trend reversal has already begun,” added Stocker. “As a next step, I will advocate for an extension of the free emissions allowances [under the EU Emissions Trading System] for our industry. This will ensure that domestic industry remains competitive and that our companies do not relocate.”

Looks like the chancellor’s idea of “going green” is more about keeping the lights on than saving the planet. 🍃💸 I suppose the only thing greener than his policies will be the envy of those in the dark!

Funny how the chancellor thinks cutting green regulations is the magic wand for energy prices—maybe he should sell it at the next EU summit! 💸🌱

Isn’t it charming how our leaders think slashing green policies will magically lower energy prices? Maybe they should try reducing taxes on fresh air while they’re at it. 😂💸

Typical EU, eh? Always finding new ways to make sure we’re all paying top dollar for the privilege of being “green” while forgetting that real life isn’t just a walk in Schönbrunn Palace. 😂💸
