Andy Burnham Set to Become UK Labour Leader — Live Updates

Andy Burnham is set to become the leader of Britain’s ruling party on Friday, taking over from Keir Starmer as the British prime minister early next week.

During a special conference in London, the Makerfield MP — who returned to parliament last month after serving as Greater Manchester mayor for nine years — will be elected as Labour’s next leader without opposition.

No other Labour MPs secured the necessary nominations, as an overwhelming majority of the parliamentary party endorsed Burnham’s candidacy, following a period of turbulence for the historically unpopular Starmer.

Having unsuccessfully contested the Labour leadership twice before, Burnham will now enter Downing Street on Monday. He has expressed ambitions of reforming the state and revitalizing politics — tasks now compounded by a significant Labour polling deficit to address before the general election scheduled for 2029.

Stay tuned with the POLITICO team for updates and analysis.
