Brussels – In her speech to the Committee on Security and Defense of the European Parliament (SEDE), Deputy Secretary-General of NATO, Radmila Šekerinska, urged the European Union to incorporate as many non-member allies as possible into its defense strategies.
Šekerinska stressed that given the current security challenges facing Europe, marked by instability and threats from various fronts, “it is our utmost responsibility to ensure the safety of our citizens.”
She highlighted the essential partnership between NATO and the EU, advocating for the ongoing enhancement of their collaboration. She praised the European Commission’s “Rearming Europe” initiative, the rise in defense spending by EU member states, and the bloc’s support for Ukraine.
Moreover, Šekerinska noted that the EU can harness its distinct economic strengths to advance defense production, innovation, and military mobility in alignment with NATO’s strategic objectives, capabilities, and standards.
She welcomed both European and national efforts to boost defense budgets and strengthen military readiness, while reiterating that transatlantic ties are fundamental to European security. In her address, she also called for a “stronger European pillar within a robust NATO.” (March 21, 2025)
