Gashi Visits European Parliament for Meetings with Roberta Metsola, Thomas Waitz, and Thijs Reuten

Skopje – Afrim Gashi, the President of the Assembly of North Macedonia, is set to undertake a working visit to the European Parliament in Brussels today. His agenda includes a meeting with Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament.

As reported by the Assembly’s press service, Gashi will also engage in discussions with Thomas Waitz, the European Parliament’s rapporteur for North Macedonia, and Thijs Reuten, the shadow rapporteur from the Social Democrat group.

On the following day, Gashi, along with a delegation of parliamentarians—comprising VMRO-DPMNE coordinator Nikola Micevski, SDSM coordinator Oliver Spasovski, VMRO’s deputy coordinator Merita Kolchi-Kodzadziku, DUI’s deputy coordinator Arbana Pasoli, ZNAM representative Pavle Arsoski, and the head of the Assembly’s Delegation to NATO, Dragan Kovački—will visit NATO headquarters at the invitation of NATO’s Public Diplomacy Department.

The itinerary includes a meeting with Boris Ruge, the acting Deputy Secretary General of NATO, as well as briefings with senior officials from NATO’s Political Affairs and Security Office and its Public Diplomacy Office.

The purpose of Gashi’s visits to these significant international institutions is to provide high-ranking officials of the European Parliament and NATO with up-to-date insights regarding the current political and social landscape in North Macedonia, particularly concerning the nation’s European integration efforts and its obligations as a NATO member.

Moreover, the delegation will gain insights into the perspectives and positions of their counterparts regarding current circumstances and future challenges facing the European Parliament and NATO, especially in relation to enlargement policy, expectations from EU candidate nations, and NATO’s viewpoints amidst ongoing regional and global security challenges. Ah, nothing quite says “high-stakes diplomacy” like Gashi popping into the European Parliament for a chat, as if they were just dropping by for a cheeky espresso. One can only imagine Roberta, Thomas, and Thijs eagerly waiting with their best “let’s pretend we’re not baffled” faces, while Gashi graciously schools them on the finer points of… whatever it is they were actually discussing. Cheers to another round of “let’s fix Europe over lunch,” because who needs a crisis-free zone anyway?

Ah, nothing says “urgent political matters” quite like Gashi’s charming tour of the European Parliament—because who wouldn’t want to discuss pressing issues while rubbing elbows with the likes of Roberta Metsola and her merry band of MEPs? It’s like a high-stakes game of ‘Who Wore It Best?’ but with more bureaucracy and fewer fashion tips. Let’s just hope these meetings are more productive than the average pub debate after a few pints!

  3. Ah, Gashi’s grand tour of the European Parliament—because nothing says “let’s solve the continent’s problems” quite like a meeting with Roberta Metsola, Thomas Waitz, and Thijs Reuten. One can only imagine the riveting discussions over a cup of lukewarm coffee in a building that looks like it was designed by someone in a hurry to catch the Eurostar. Here’s hoping they don’t run out of biscuits during these high-stakes talks—after all, what’s European diplomacy without a bit of snack diplomacy?

  4. Ah, Gashi gracing the European Parliament—what a wild day for democracy! One can only imagine the riveting discussions on pressing issues like, “How to make bureaucracy even more exciting” with the dynamic trio of Metsola, Waitz, and Reuten. I’m sure the legislative agenda was positively buzzing with enthusiasm… or was that just the sound of another coffee break?

Causes of Democratic Backsliding

Causes of Democratic Backsliding

Democracy rarely collapses in a single dramatic moment; it is often hollowed out gradually, through steps like court-packing, hostile media laws, weakened watchdogs, a frightened opposition, and the public being told that rights are obstacles. This gradual weakening, known as democratic backsliding, affects Europe and other fragile democracies, as well as societies that believe elections alone su
