Western Balkans-EU Summit: Meloni Emphasizes “Reunification with Europe is the Only Path Forward”

Brussels (ANSA) – The EU-Western Balkans Summit in Brussels aims to send a strong political message highlighting the vital significance of the strategic partnership between the EU and the Western Balkans, which is progressing with tangible actions. This summit marks the first convened by the newly appointed President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, who, just three days into his role, hosted an informal dinner with leaders from the Balkan nations, reflecting the region’s importance on the EU’s agenda.

“The timing of today’s summit is perfect, as it is the inaugural meeting I am leading as President of the European Council. This demonstrates our commitment to enhancing cooperation with the Balkan region,” Costa stated. The summit featured two key sessions, with the first focused on fostering political and economic collaborations between the EU and the Western Balkans.

Key items on the agenda included discussions on the growth plan for the region and strategies to accelerate and deepen the EU’s political commitments with Western Balkan countries, particularly in areas related to common policies and security. Another crucial topic was the importance of reconciliation, regional cooperation, and fostering good neighborly relations, which play a pivotal role in progressing the EU accession of Balkan partners.

The second session addressed the geopolitical landscape, paying particular attention to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the hybrid influence of Russia on regional nations. While enlargement was not a formal agenda item, the summit provided an opportunity to reaffirm the European aspirations of the Balkan countries.

“There is no alternative but to complete the reunification of the Western Balkans with Europe,” declared Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in her address at the summit. “Europe is your rightful home. Italy is committed to supporting you on this journey. You can count on us,” she assured the leaders of the Balkan nations (December 18).

So, Meloni thinks a summit is all it takes to reunite the Balkans with Europe? Brilliant! Next, let’s just have a few cups of espresso and call it a day—problem solved! ☕️💼

Looks like Ms. Meloni’s giving out ‘Europe is your home’ pamphlets like they’re free samples at a market—next, she’ll be handing out housewarming gifts! 🏡🥳 Let’s just hope the Balkans don’t realize the fine print says “conditions apply.” 😂
