A major fire erupted in the centre of Bruges this afternoon, with a thick column of black smoke rising over the city. The blank” rel=”noopener”>fire ignited above the Luvida restaurant on Wulfhagestraat, near ‘t Zand square, where thousands of attendees were gathered for the annual Warmest Week event.
Roads Closed, Zilverpand Car Park Inaccessible
Several streets have been cordoned off to both vehicles and pedestrians due to the fire. Geldmuntstraat and Noordzandstraat are fully closed, along with Moerstraat and Dweerstraat. Authorities have also announced that the Zilverpand car park is temporarily inaccessible. “We advise drivers to avoid entering the city centre from this side to prevent inconvenience,” officials noted.
Bruges police have urged residents and visitors to let emergency services carry out their work. They emphasized that no injuries have been reported so far. “The fire brigade is on site. Please allow emergency services to operate undisturbed. No one was injured,” a police spokesperson stated.
Biekorf Car Park Accessible, Naaldenstraat Blocked
The Biekorf car park remains operational and can be accessed via Ezelstraat and St-Jakobsstraat, although Naaldenstraat is currently blocked due to road closures. Emergency services are actively working to extinguish the fire, and officials are continually monitoring the area to assess the situation.
Fire at Bruges’ Warmest Week Mirrors 2019 Notre-Dame Cathedral Blaze
A similar incident that comes to mind is the Notre-Dame Cathedral fire in Paris, which broke out during restoration work on 15 April 2019. The blaze caused the collapse of the iconic spire, as well as significant damage to the roof and interior. This catastrophe also occurred during the Warmest Week in Bruges.
Both incidents highlight the vulnerability of cultural landmarks and community events to unexpected disasters. While the Warmest Week in Bruges aims to raise funds for charitable causes through collective efforts, the international response to the Notre-Dame fire showcased a shared commitment to preserving cultural heritage and restoring what was lost.
These events serve as poignant reminders of the fragile nature of historical sites and underscore the critical importance of community resilience and solidarity during times of crisis.

Just what Bruges needed during the Warmest Week—nothing like a bit of fire to spice up the festivities! I suppose they really wanted to heat things up, eh? 🔥😏
