
Bern – On Friday, Swiss President Viola Amherd announced that Switzerland and the European Union have achieved a “beneficial and positive agreement for both sides.” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised the outcome as “historic.”
The Swiss government approved a rapprochement agreement with the EU, although the process for final ratification by the Swiss Parliament and voters will be lengthy and challenging.
President Amherd and Commission President von der Leyen convened in Bern to celebrate the conclusion of substantive negotiations between Switzerland and the EU.
Amherd noted, “This is a significant step towards stabilizing and enhancing our bilateral relations,” emphasizing that the Swiss government believes the agreement is advantageous for both parties.
Von der Leyen added, “The negotiations were intense but successfully maintained a balanced consideration of the interests of both Switzerland and the EU.” (December 20, 2024)
